News from the US – Covey-Farms Forever Jade

March 26, 2015 by admin

Covey_Farms_Forever_JadeOFFICIAL NOTIFICATION

From: Becky Payne, Executive Secretary
Date: March 19, 2015

The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association has been advised by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) that Covey-Farms Forever Jade, Registration Number 100304923, has genomes present from the Holstein bull, Indianhead Red-Marker-ET, indicating that he is her sire. The CDCB provided data from two separate genomic tests conducted at two different laboratories, DNA Landmarks and Geneseek. The first was a high density test and the second was a low density test. Both tests had the same conclusion: HOUSAM2284915 (Indianhead Red-Marker-ET) is the sire. Genomic test results for Indianhead Red-Marker-ET were in the CDCB genomic database, resulting in this conclusion. He is a red carrier, black and white bull, with no other known recessives.

The official method of parentage verification for the ABA is DNA typing. A DNA case report for “Jade” was completed by ImmGen Inc. in 2006. Her sire and dam had no DNA cases on file as the ABA progressed from blood testing to DNA sampling in the early 2000s. On the basis of the information available to them at the time, the testing laboratory noted that neither parent had genotypes
available. “Jade” met the requirements for being a donor dam by having her DNA profile placed on record at the ABA; and therefore her embryo transfer (ET) progeny were eligible for registration.

As part of the discovery and investigation process, the ABA was thorough in collaborating with experts in this field. “Jade” was flagged for this parentage discrepancy because her sire’s genomics are on file at the CDCB.

Based on the current known facts, the ABA Executive Committee has directed that the pedigree of Covey-Farms Forever Jade, Registration Number 100304923, be corrected to reflect the change in her sire from Covey-Farms Reno Forever to Indianhead Red-Marker-ET. She will therefore be
registered as a 50% Ayrshire. As a consequence of this action, all registered Ayrshires with “Jade” present in their pedigrees will be updated accordingly to reflect the change in Jade’s parentage. All show winnings and production honors earned in the past will stand as they are in the ABA’s pedigree database for every animal affected by this change.

The ABA is confident that this mistake in parentage was an unfortunate accident after consulting with “Jade’s” breeder, Stanley Covey of Rose, OK; and current owners, the partnership of Covey and Tom and Sara Kruse of Dyersville, IA. No blame is being assigned to the breeder or owners of this cow.

Approximately 400 animals (male and female) recorded by the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders Association to date have “Jade” present in their pedigrees. The Association has updated the registry status of these animals and is proceeding to issue replacement registration certificates to their owners.

By LAURA GRIFFIN, The Australian Dairy Farmer, 21/01/2015

Top Price 2015 IDW Elite Ayrshire SaleThe International Dairy Week elite Ayrshire sale set a new Australian record for the highest average achieved, according to Dairy Livestock Services auctioneer Brian Leslie.

Breeders from across Victoria, interstate and even overseas (New Zealand) provided spirited competition for the 16 female animals (heifers and cows). The international judge Duncan Hunter, England, demonstrated his high opinion of the Australian Ayrshires shown by securing the only embryo package offered – paying $760 each for four embryos by sire De La Plaine Prime and dam Boldview Parndara.

The sale topped at $9000 for Lot 2, Paschendale Cinder Blossom-ET (pictured above) that was knocked down to Araluen Park, Shady Creek and the average over the 16 live lots was $3530.

Judge:      Mr Duncan Hunter – England

Duncan HunterDuncan Hunter is from Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, just outside the famous M25, London’s orbital motorway in England. He is married to Sarah and they have four children. He has been a breeder of Ayrshire Cattle all of his life under the Haresfoot prefix. He sold his herd in 2011 for a record breaking average price in the UK and this was due to the purchase of Haresfoot Farm and has since developed a new horse livery business and commercial lettings at the farm. Duncan is still is involved in breeding through his syndicate partnership under the prefix Smartmove.

During his time as a breeder, Duncan was very fortunate to have bred some great families which helped him to achieve high yields and phenomenal show successes. The families who did particularly well and who are world renowned are the Bella, Ella and Pamela families. Over the years he has judged most of the major shows in the UK throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland including the National All Breeds Calf Show, Royal Highland, South West Dairy Show, Great Yorkshire, the new UK Dairy day and Balmoral amongst others. He has also judged in Finland at the National Show and also the Finnish Showmanship Championships at the Winter Show. Duncan has officiated in numerous supreme Interbreed championships and has also judged most of the other dairy breeds on many occasions.

Since 2011 Duncan has worked for the UK Ayrshire Cattle Society on a part time basis as Assistant Breed Secretary. In May of 2014 he was taken on as full time Breed Manager for Ayrshires UK. His job involves developing the breed in the UK for the future, solving membership problems, promotion and publicity, representing the breed at industry level, arranging, running and assessing breed judging schools for members, resolving any registration and classification problems and the list goes on! He also sits on the board for CDI (Centre of Dairy Information), is manager of the Breed Heritage committee and represents the UK for the World Ayrshire Federation.

Duncan is both thrilled and honoured to be invited to come to Australia to judge the Ayrshire Show and Australia’s Supreme Champion Dairy Cow at IDW 2015, and looks forward to meeting the people of Australia and officiating at one of the world’s largest agricultural events.

Ayrshires end four-decade divide

January 8, 2015 by admin

by ELIZABETH ANDERSON, The Stock Journal  –  01/01/2015

Ayrshires end four-decade divideTHE Ayrshire breed will be moving forward this year as a united organisation.

From January 1 (today), the two existing national organisations have merged into one; Australian Ayrshires.

This follows almost 40 years of division after a split in 1977 led to the formation of a second representative group.

Australian Ayshire Breeders Association president Scott Braendler, Jervois, and Ayrshire Australia Limited president Michael Hentshcke, Glencoe, are both optimistic about what the move will mean for the future of the breed.

“This is something really positive for all Ayrshire breeders in Australia,” Mr Hentschke said.

“Time has healed any conflict and the administration and members could see the benefit of one organisation.

“It’s good to be back together.”

Mr Braendler said that in the past, there could be a slight “us and them” feeling at shows between the two groups, but as new generations have come up in the breed, that has disappeared.

“All that has been and gone now,” he said.

He said the process of working towards a single national body took between 18 months and two years.

“The two federal committees have worked together to come up with a solution that was equitable and positive for the breed,” he said.

“Being a minor breed in the industry we know it’s silly to have two organisations. There was doubling up on everything.

“It’s not feasible or financially viable in the long term.”

A new constitution was developed and voted in, with the initial committee to include five members from each existing group.

The new committee plans to meet later this month and vote in a new president for the combined body.

Membership of the federal organisation also includes membership of each of the state groups.

Mr Hentschke said once the two had come together and decided to make the change, it was simply a matter of “ticking the boxes and making sure all processes are covered”.

He said there were many benefits to the newly merged body, including reducing job replication.
